You can browse both candidates now on the <a href=\"https:\/\/smart-data-models.github.io\/Candidates\/\">search page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you missed it, the <a href=\"https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/index.php\/introducing-the-smart-data-models-candidates-repository\/\">first post<\/a> explains what the Candidates repository is and why it exists. This second entry is a good illustration of exactly the kind of situation it&#8217;s meant to surface.<\/p>\n<h2>A repository that isn&#8217;t the ontology<\/h2>\n<p>The EDINT Tourism repository doesn&#8217;t actually contain an ontology \u2014 its own README says it &#8220;only includes usage examples.&#8221; The real vocabulary lives externally: SEGITTUR&#8217;s Core Tourism Ontology, a reference model for Spain&#8217;s future Intelligent Destination Platform, with 388 classes, real SHACL constraints, and dozens of controlled vocabularies. The EDINT repository demonstrates a thin, deliberately narrow slice of it \u2014 11 classes, backed by real open-data records from Arag\u00f3n, Castilla y Le\u00f3n, Gij\u00f3n, Alcal\u00e1 de Henares and Segovia. This candidate translates exactly that slice, not the other 377 classes SEGITTUR&#8217;s ontology defines.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-38379\" src=\"https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df-300x164.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df-1024x559.png 1024w, https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df-642x350.png 642w, https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df-150x82.png 150w, https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df-1320x720.png 1320w, https:\/\/smartdatamodels.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gemini_Generated_Image_x9dfjtx9dfjtx9df.png 1408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What we found inside SEGITTUR&#8217;s own ontology<\/h2>\n<p>Translating from real, formal ontologies has a side effect: it surfaces inconsistencies that are easy to miss when a model is only ever read by humans. A few worth mentioning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rating is defined three incompatible ways<\/strong> in the same ontology. The formal class definition uses <code>ratingUnit<\/code>\/<code>ratingValue<\/code> (matching every real example we found \u2014 &#8220;stars&#8221; \/ &#8220;3&#8221;); the ontology&#8217;s own SHACL shapes instead define <code>bookingValue<\/code>, <code>googleReviewValue<\/code> and <code>tripAdvisorValue<\/code> as separate float fields; and the SHACL shape for <code>Hotel<\/code> specifically adds a fourth pattern, a flat <code>stars<\/code> integer. None of the real data uses either of the SHACL variants. We followed the real data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Several property and class names in the repository&#8217;s own example files don&#8217;t match the ontology they claim to use<\/strong>: <code>numberOfAccomodationUnits<\/code> should be <code>numberOfAccommodationUnits<\/code>, <code>offersAccommodationRateType<\/code> should be <code>typeOfAccommodationRate<\/code>, and the historical-resource classes <code>Amphiteatre<\/code> and <code>Acueduct<\/code> should be <code>Amphitheatre<\/code> and <code>Aqueduct<\/code>. We corrected these against the authoritative ontology while keeping the real recorded values.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>hasBookingChannel<\/code> is used directly on a <code>Hotel<\/code> instance<\/strong> in the ontology&#8217;s own documentation example \u2014 but its formally declared domain doesn&#8217;t actually include Hotel&#8217;s superclass chain. A genuine domain\/usage mismatch in the source, not something we introduced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of this is recorded in the candidate&#8217;s <code>standard-metadata.yaml<\/code>, exactly so nobody has to rediscover it.<\/p>\n<h2>What still needs checking<\/h2>\n<p>This one carries a higher duplication risk than our first candidate, and we&#8217;re saying so plainly rather than waiting for someone else to notice: Smart Data Models already has official <strong>SmartDestinations<\/strong> and <strong>PointOfInterest<\/strong> domains, and this candidate almost certainly overlaps with models that already exist there.
